At Steinmann Prosthetics & Orthotics, we understand that breast surgery recovery is deeply personal. Our certified mastectomy fitters provide one-on-one support and customized solutions to help you regain confidence, comfort, and balance after surgery.
Our Services
Custom breast prostheses – Precise and customized breast form using 3D scanning – matching your natural skin tone and hand painted for realism.
Ready-to-wear breast forms – multiple options for you including: non-silicone post-surgery; soft leisure wear; lightweight options for daily wear; partials or traditional breast forms
Mastectomy bras & camisoles – Bra designs which are supportive and stylish with hidden pockets for your breast form. Post-operative camisoles available prior to a permanent breast prostheses or as an alternative to a mastectomy bra and prosthesis.
Post-operative compression garments – for comfortable compression and shaping support.
Lymphedema compression sleeves & garments – gentle gradient compression for comfort and control.
What to Expect
Approximately 6-8 weeks after breast surgery, it’s time to meet with a certified mastectomy fitter. By this stage, most surgical sites are healed and ready for a properly weighted breast prosthesis.
Women who have undergone breast-conserving surgery (such as lumpectomy) can also benefit from a fitting. Partial breast forms are designed to gently restore balance and symmetry.
Our care is also for those who have had mastectomies years ago. Breast forms and bras have come a long way – lighter, more breathable and beautifully designed. Even if your original prosthesis was comfortable at the time, your body and lifestyle may have changed and a new fitting can improve balance, posture and overall comfort.
Who performs the fittings?
Your fitting is performed by a Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF) who specialize in post-surgical care and are trained through a national manufacturer. They understand how to match products with different surgery types and personal preferences.

Your private fitting experience
Evaluation
The fitter will conduct a patient intake and will check that the surgical area is healed. It is recommended to bring a button blouse for easy removal.
Measurement
Gentle measurements are taken under the remaining breast and over the remaining breast to determine the best bra fit and breast form size.
Fitting
Together, you and the fitter will explore styles which will best match your body contours. The fitter will bring in bra options for you to try on before fitting the breast form.
Review
You’ll see how everything looks and feels under the fitting robe. Our goal is to ensure you are completely satisfied with your fit.
For Long-time Survivors
If you’ve had your mastectomy for several years, a refitting can make a big difference. Weight changes, aging and natural shifts in your body can affect balance and comfort. New Prostheses and bras may offer lighter materials, cooler fabrics and improved symmetry.
Know Your Rights
You deserve to feel comfortable, confident and supported – not just after surgery, but throughout your recovery and beyond. Most insurance plans including Medicare, Medicaid and major private carriers recognize the ongoing need for properly fitted breast prostheses and garments.
Coverage typically includes replacement items after the Reasonable Useful Lifetime (RUL) of each product.
Typical Replacement Guidelines
- Mastectomy Bras: RUL is 3 months
- Post-operative camisole: RUL is 6 months
- Non-silicone Breast Form: RUL is 6 months
- Silicone Breast prosthesis: RUL is 2 years
