Prosthetic Solutions at Steinmann Prosthetics & Orthotics
Empowering Motion. Enhancing Lives.
At Steinmann Prosthetics & Orthotics, we believe every patient deserves a customized path to mobility and independence. Whether you’re adjusting to life after a lower or upper limb amputation, or seeking advanced upgrades to your current prosthetic system, our expert team is here to guide you—from your initial evaluation through fitting, training, and lifelong support.
Types of Lower Limb Prostheses
Lower extremity prosthetic care is focused on stability, alignment, and functional mobility. Our team will help determine the right system based on your amputation level, activity level (K-Level), and daily demands.
Below-Knee (Transtibial) Prostheses
-
Ideal when the knee joint is preserved
-
Offers improved balance and energy efficiency
-
Typically includes a custom socket, pylon, and foot system
Above-Knee (Transfemoral) Prostheses
-
Includes a prosthetic knee and foot system
-
May incorporate microprocessor-controlled knees for advanced gait function
-
Designed for shock absorption, balance, and safe ambulation
Partial Foot, Syme, or Ankle Disarticulation Prostheses
-
Preserves more limb function while restoring walking symmetry
-
Custom-molded sockets and low-profile foot components
Hip and Knee Disarticulation Prostheses
-
More complex systems involving full leg loss
-
Requires highly customized components and advanced gait training
Understanding Upper Limb Prostheses
Upper extremity prostheses are uniquely complex due to the variety of motions and fine motor tasks the upper body performs. Depending on your goals, amputation level, and mobility rating (K-Level), we offer a wide spectrum of upper limb options including:
Passive Prostheses
-
Lightweight cosmetic arms or hands
-
Designed to restore body symmetry and improve appearance
-
Often used for social confidence and balance
Body-Powered Prostheses
-
Uses harnesses and cables connected to your opposite shoulder
-
Control is achieved through gross body movement
-
Durable and reliable in physically demanding settings
Myoelectric (Externally Powered) Prostheses
-
Controlled through electrical signals generated by your own muscle contractions
-
Offers enhanced hand function, grip patterns, and natural appearance
-
Rechargeable battery-powered with multiple grip and hold modes
Hybrid Prosthetic Systems
-
Combines both body-powered and myoelectric features
-
Offers strength from cable-driven systems and dexterity from electronic control

Understanding Insurance & Patient Rights
Verify Your Coverage
We help patients confirm their insurance benefits before starting the prosthetic process to avoid unexpected costs.
Protect Your Benefits
Only sign documents when you’re satisfied with your device. Do not allow any provider to submit claims prematurely.
Know Your Rights
You have the right to choose or change your prosthetic provider. Advocate for your needs or bring someone with you to help.
Two-Leg Standard
You are entitled to both a preparatory leg and a definitive leg.

What is K-Level?
Your K-Level (K0 to K4) determines what type of prosthetic components you’re eligible to receive, based on Medicare and insurance standards:
-
K0: Not a prosthetic candidate
-
K1: Household ambulator – level surfaces only
-
K2: Limited community ambulator – curbs, stairs, uneven terrain
-
K3: Community ambulator – variable cadence, most obstacles
-
K4: High-impact user – athletes, children
Our goal is to help every patient reach their highest potential K-Level through therapy and training.

Wound Care & Amputation Prevention
For patients with diabetes or peripheral artery disease, routine wound management is essential to avoid amputation.
Common Risk Factors
-
Reduced nerve function or pain sensation
-
Poor circulation
-
Delayed healing from unnoticed injuries
Preventive Interventions
-
Regular assessments of foot skin, temperature, and blood flow
-
Blood sugar management, insulin therapy, and vascular care
-
Advanced imaging (e.g., ABI, ultrasound)
-
Surgical interventions, including angioplasty or bypass
Over 100,000 amputations occur annually due to diabetes and PAD. We work closely with your physician to recommend off-loading devices or orthoses when needed.
