A New 3D Printed Option for Cranial Remolding Orthoses

At Steinmann Prosthetics & Orthotics, we always strive to provide families with the most advanced, effective, and compassionate care. That’s why we’re excited to announce that we are now offering Orthomerica’s 3D printed cranial helmets—including the industry-leading STARband® 3D—as part of our cranial remolding program.
If your baby has been diagnosed with plagiocephaly, we know this can feel like a big, emotional decision. As a parent, you want the safest and most effective option for your child. With Orthomerica’s 3D printed solutions, we’re proud to offer just that.
This cutting-edge helmet is designed using the same clinically trusted STARband® principles, but manufactured through advanced 3D printing technology, giving families another option for effective and personalized cranial care.
What’s New About the 3D Printed STARband®?
We already use 3D scanning to ensure a precise fit for both our traditional and 3D printed helmets. The difference lies in how the helmet is made and how it feels for your baby.
Benefits of the 3D Printed STARband®:
• Lightweight Design – Easier for babies to wear throughout the day
• Smoother Interior – Designed for added comfort and skin protection
• Improved Ventilation – Helps keep your baby cool
• Same Clinical Effectiveness – Built on Orthomerica’s proven STARband® technology, trusted worldwide
It’s a modern update that enhances comfort and aesthetics, while maintaining the same high level of clinical care.
Is a Helmet Right for My Baby?
Helmet therapy is more effective between 3-6 months of age, when the skull is growing quickly and can still be gently reshaped.
You might consider a helmet if:
• You notice flattening that hasn’t improved with repositioning
• Your pediatrician or specialist has recommended helmet therapy
• Your baby’s head shape affects symmetry or alignment
We always start with a 3D scan to provide accurate cranial measurements to you and your PCP to help you decide on the best course of action for your child.
What to Expect During the Process
Whether you choose a traditional or 3D printed STARband®, here’s what your journey looks like:
1. 3D Scan & Evaluation
We use Orthomerica’s Starscanner® scanning system to get a fast, gentle, and highly accurate scan of your baby’s head shape.
2. Custom Helmet Fabrication
Based on your baby’s unique measurements, Orthomerica creates a helmet—either traditional or 3D printed—that encourages more symmetrical growth.
3. Fitting Appointment
Once the helmet arrives, we ensure the perfect fit and teach you how to care for and use it safely.
4. Follow-Ups
You’ll visit us every few weeks to monitor progress and make adjustments. Many babies wear the helmet for 3–6 months, for 23 hours a day.
Compassionate, Family-Centered Care
We know this process can feel emotional—but you’re not alone. At Steinmann Prosthetics & Orthotics, our Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist (CPO) is here to answer your questions, support your decisions, and celebrate your baby’s progress with you every step of the way.
Choosing between a traditional or 3D printed helmet depends on your baby’s needs, your timeline, and your preferences—and we’ll help guide you to the best fit.
