What is K Level?

Finding the Right Prosthetic for Your Lifestyle

K Level

Your K-Level (K0–K4) is a standardized functional classification used by your prosthetist, Medicare, and most insurance providers to help determine which prosthetic components are most appropriate for your mobility, activity level, and rehabilitation goals.

K0: Does not currently have the ability or potential to safely ambulate with a prosthesis.
K1: Household ambulator who primarily walks on level surfaces at a fixed cadence.
K2: Limited community ambulator who can navigate low-level environmental barriers such as curbs, stairs, and uneven terrain.
K3: Community ambulator who walks at varying speeds and regularly encounters most environmental obstacles.
K4: High-activity individual whose lifestyle or activities place demands beyond typical walking, such as athletics, physically demanding occupations, or active children.

Below-Knee (Transtibial) Prostheses

Designed for individuals who have retained their knee joint, below-knee prostheses provide excellent stability, comfort, and energy efficiency. Custom-built for your anatomy and activity level, these devices help restore a natural gait and make everyday movement more comfortable and confident.

Above-Knee (Transfemoral) Prostheses

Above-knee prostheses are engineered to restore mobility while providing stability and control. Depending on your needs and activity level, your prosthesis may include advanced knee technology, including microprocessor-controlled knees, to improve balance, safety, and walking efficiency.

Partial Foot, Syme, & Ankle Disarticulation Prostheses

These prosthetic solutions are designed to preserve as much of your natural limb function as possible while improving balance and restoring a smoother, more symmetrical walking pattern. Each device is custom fabricated to maximize comfort, protect your remaining limb, and support your daily activities.

Hip & Knee Disarticulation Prostheses

For individuals with higher-level amputations, these highly customized prosthetic systems are designed to provide the greatest possible stability, mobility, and independence. Types of Prosthetic Control Systems

Upper limb prostheses are available with several control options depending on your lifestyle and functional needs.

Passive Prostheses – Designed primarily for appearance and light stabilization tasks.
Body-Powered Prostheses – Operated using a cable and harness system, offering durability, reliability, and tactile feedback.
Myoelectric Prostheses – Controlled by electrical signals generated by your muscles, allowing more natural movement and grip patterns.
Hybrid Prostheses – Combine body-powered and myoelectric technologies to optimize function.

How Your Prosthesis Is Selected

Unlike lower limb prosthetics, upper limb prostheses are not assigned a K-Level. Instead, your prosthetist evaluates several factors to recommend the most appropriate device, including:

Level of amputation
Occupation and work requirements
Daily activities and hobbies
Strength and range of motion
Functional goals
Cognitive ability to operate the device
Cosmetic preferences
Insurance coverage and medical necessity

Every prosthesis is customized to help you perform the activities that matter most to you.

The Upper Limb Prosthetic Process

Your prosthetic journey is personalized and typically includes:

Comprehensive evaluation and discussion of your goals
Measurements or digital scanning of your residual limb
Test socket fitting (when appropriate)
Fabrication of your custom prosthesis
Initial fitting and adjustments
Occupational therapy and prosthetic training

Caring for Your Prosthesis

Daily skin inspections
Cleaning your socket and liners regularly
Charging electronic devices as directed
Reporting changes in fit or discomfort promptly
Scheduling routine follow-up appointments

Insurance & Coverage

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover upper limb prostheses when medically necessary. Coverage varies depending on your plan and the prescribed components.
